Date

Second announcement

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has the responsibility for developing biokinetic and dosimetric models for radionuclides. These models are accepted internationally as the basis for the assessment of doses and risks from intakes of radionuclides, for the interpretation of bioassay data, and for demonstrating compliance with dose limits. They have also been applied in the calculation of dose coefficients given in the International Basic Safety Standards, in the EURATOM Directive, and in national regulations and Codes of Practice.

The planned Workshop will provide a forum for considering developments in internal dosimetry as applied to occupational, public and medical exposure and to present new information related to its future development. It follows previous meetings on internal dosimetry in Angers, France (1986), Versailles, France (1988); Elmau, Germany (1991); Bath, UK (1993); and Avignon, France (1997, 1999). It aims to bring together those involved in radiation protection research related to problems of incorporated radionuclides, occupational health physicists, regulators and representatives of international advisory bodies, including ICRP.

Sessions will include more than 20 papers by invited speakers as well as proffered papers. There will also be poster presentations.

Topics

- Practical application of the ICRP Human Respiratory Tract Model
- A new model for the Human Alimentary Tract
- Physiologically based biokinetic models and their application in dosimetry
- Exposures and doses from depleted uranium
- Doses to the offspring from intakes of radionuclides by the mother
- Developments in monitoring equipment
- Methods for the interpretation of bioassay data
- ICRP guidance on occupational exposure
- Medical applications
- Treatment of accidental intakes
- Dose reconstruction
- Development of phantoms from medical imaging data
- Lessons from interlaboratory comparisons

Programme

The scientific programme will commence on Monday morning at 09:30 and on the following days at 08:30. It will end on Thursday afternoon at 15:00 following a Panel Discussion.
The Workshop will be followed by a Satellite Meeting organised by EURADOS and EULEP covering internal dosimetry projects supported by the EC under the 5th Framework Programme. Their coordinators will present the projects. The first meeting was held in September 2001 (link). The aims are to exchange with a wider audience information on the scope and issues of the projects, to investigate the integration of their work towards the development of internal dose assessment and monitoring. Following the Workshop, this satellite meeting will focus on the scope, complementary approaches and perspectives of these programmes. The Satellite Meeting is open to all those attending the Workshop.
